Path to Speech Therapy

What is the process?

  1. Parents and/or teachers alert the speech-language pathologist of a potential area of need.

  2. Speech/language screening is administered.

  3. If the student fails the screening, a classroom intervention plan is developed and implemented by the teacher

  4. Progress is monitored for a series of weeks.

  5. A lack of progress after various interventions and increasing intensity will warrant a referral for a speech therapy evaluation.

  6. The Admissions and Release Committe (ARC) meets together. This includes the parent, teacher, speech-language pathologist, and chairperson.

  7. ARC decides if a speech therapy evaluation will be conducted.

  8. If so, the evaluation will be planned and conducted.

  9. ARC meets again to discuss the evaluation and to determine if the student requires speech therapy services.
